Our company is a forestry based company within Suriname and is starting up sustainable selective harvesting operations in East and West Suriname. Our company will adhere to the top international standards for professionalism and sustainability and requires qualified managers to make this happen. There are currently requirements for Forest Managers to support the expanding program.

Forest Manager 
(Stationed in South America)Suriname

Responsibilities:
The Forest Manager is responsible for the achievement of formal company production targets. He will work with the Suriname Forestry Manager in overseeing the day-to-day management of the Company’s forestry operations in Suriname. The Forest Manager will be field-based and will be responsible for all forestry-related activities in the forest area including but not limited to:

    Harvest planning and management
    Logistics planning and management
    Organizing work schedules
    Supervising contractors and forest workers
    Data entry and reporting
    FSC implementation
    Monitoring
    Health & Safety


Under the direction of the Suriname Forestry Manager he will be responsible for the coordination of all forest activities. The Forest Manager will prepare plans for the successful execution of the required forest activities, and will submit progress reports, including all results and bottlenecks regarding the forestry operations. Action plans to solve problems and meet targets are required.

Responsible for the quality of all forest operations
The Forest Manager will monitor the quality of pre-harvest and post-harvest activities. The monitoring program focuses on the contract compliance and the results of forest activities to assure adherence to government regulations and FSC standards.

He will execute field evaluations according to FSC Standards for:

    Road construction and road maintenance
    Block demarcation
    Tree measurement, enumeration and mapping (inventory)
    Tree marking
    Installation of skid trails
    Felling
    Extraction
    Log registration

The Forest Manager will submit production records of the daily productivity and will prepare evaluation reports and recommendations. He will organize and execute on-the-job trainings when necessary.

Responsible for the monitoring of fauna and flora
The forest manager will coordinate a monitoring program for PSPS's, in order to analyze the effects of harvesting on tree growth rates and tree species prevalence.

The Forest Manager will coordinate a monitoring program in order to assess the impacts of forest operations on populations and habitats.

Responsible for the general discipline

    Implementation of the company's code of conduct
    Supervision on working hours and general discipline
    Supervision on the use of safety equipment


Responsible for the monitoring of materials
Management and timely requisition of forestry supply stocks.

Requirements:
Candidates must be willing to stay longer periods (± 3 weeks) in the forest and must have good knowledge of the English language. Candidates must be physically fit, with good organizational, team working, analytical and IT skills.

Fitness:
The job can be physically demanding and involves working outdoors, sometimes in all weather conditions.

Organizational skills:

    Planning: planning of the pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest activities in order to meet the company's production goals.
    Coordination: adjusting actions in relation to program progress
    Time management: managing one's time and the time of others

Resource management skills:

    Management of Personnel Resources: motivating, developing and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job
    Management of Material Resources: obtaining and seeing tho the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do the work.

IT skills:
The job requires a sound knowledge of computers and software to be able to plan, monitor, control and report operations. Competence in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word are expected. Knowledge of Microsoft Access and ArcGIS is not required but appreciated.
Qualifications and training
A University Degree in a relevant subject such as forestry, engineering, ecology or agriculture is normally required for employment as a forester/forest manager but is not an absolute requirement. Practical experience of 3 – 5 years in forestry or a related field is preferred.

Salary
The salary will be agreed based on qualifications and experience.
